Wine Storage and Chillers Article

If you have read your Old Testament then you will have come across the account of Noah who planted a vineyard and proceeded to harvest wine from it. The idea of wine is not new and has been enjoyed for countless millennia before us. The grape, which yields wine, has been discovered in fossils dated over 60 million years ago, right up to the heyday of the dinosaurs. Despite these historic data, there still no precise knowledge of when exactly was wine discovered for the very first time. Most popular legends attribute the discovery of this drink to a Persian princess that is remarkably similar to the discovery of coffee. Apparently, this princess did something that caused her to lose favor with the king. When this happened, she grew quite depressed and tried to commit suicide by eating grapes that had gone bad because of being stored in a jar for a rather long time. She became quite intoxicated and fell into a deep slumber after a while. Upon waking up, she found herself very refreshed and relaxed so she had another go at the good old grapes fermenting in the jar. The upshot of this whole affair was that her whole demeanor and attitude changed and she was in the good with the king again. Of course, the princess shared her grapes with the king and the rest and from thereon it spread to the court and so history was made.

These days, the production and consumption of wine increases annually and there are people buying rare wines either for their own pleasure or for future sales. Regardless of what type of wine keeper you may be, you must know that temperature and humidity control are crucial in the proper storage of wine and that where we come to wine storage and chillers.

Wine storage and chillers are quite closely related because wine needs to be kept cool and what is more, within a constant temperature range with very few fluctuations. A high temperature will ruin the wine just as heat destroys most stored foods. Similarly, lower temperatures that cause wine to freeze will leave with a cellar full of raw material from which you can make vinegar if you want. Wine storage and chillers need proper synchronization to achieve the appropriate balance between temperature range and humidity.

Different kinds of wines need different wine storage and chillers on different settings. This rule applies even when you take the wine away out of wine storage and chillers because certain wines do not handle chilling quite well. Remember that wine is a liquid and liquids are always cooler than air, so a temperature of 70 degrees means that your wine will already be at the optimum drinking temperature of 65 degrees. Do not chill the wine to bring the temperature down or you will ruin the flavor. Other wines, whites and blushes, need refrigeration after being taken out of wine storage and chillers. For these types of wines, the ideal drinking temperature is 40 degrees so refrigeration might be required.

Of course, always remember that when you take the bottle out of wine storage and chillers, whether you chill it or not, always open it and allow the wine to breathe for about half-an-house before drinking it.
