Essentials of Dessert Wine Storage

Sometimes regular dessert just does not cut it, especially if you are not in the frame of mind when the term dessert brings up images that are typically associated with childish cravings. At the same time, tea of coffee after dinner might get boring after a while and you might need something different just for a change. If you have ever gone through such a time then you must keep some dessert wine handy and for that, you will need dessert wine storage equipment. Dessert wines are no different from regular wines in their basic constitution. The difference is mostly in flavor, with dessert wines being a lot sweeter though no less potent. Dessert wines are likely to contain other ingredients for higher alcohol levels and they will be more on the syrupy side than regular wines. The grapes for dessert wine are picked late during the harvest. This preserves the sugars in them.

Dessert wine storage is different from regular wine storage because the wine is available in much smaller bottles. The glasses for dessert wine are also different because only a small amount is served at a time. Dessert wine storage might be different but the serving rules still remain the same with whites and blushes requiring they be chilled before serving while the reds are served at room temperature and both after being allowed to breathe for a while. Dessert wines come in heavy and light flavors and it is recommended the former be used in winters and the latter in summers.

Dessert wines are flavored with almond, peach, oak, and several herbs. All these additions lend their own distinctive flavor to the original one supplied by the grapes. You need not necessarily take the bottle out of dessert wine storage to drink it. Other uses include the addition of dessert wine to paste desert or sweet cream. When you are planning to add dessert wine to dessert, always make sure that the wine is sweeter than the dessert itself or you will ruin the taste of both. A good addition to your dessert wine storage will be fortified wines like Vermouth, Sherry, Port, and Madeira.

Unlike other forms of alcohol, wine is the most easily damaged by environment changes like temperature, humidity, and lighting. You must procure a good form of dessert wine storage if you do not want to have it unceremoniously converted into vinegar. The dessert wine storage of your choice must be placed in a spot that offers constant temperature, humidity, darkness, and is free from vibrations. The temperature must be between 50-55 degrees, though occasional variation between 45-60 degrees is acceptable. Basements are good places because they are damp and not completely open to surface variations.

Dessert wine storage really depends on how long you are planning to keep your wine in storage. You must realize that some people treat their wine as a long-term investment rather than something to consume at the next closest celebration event. The dessert wine storage requirements for these different wine buyers are quite different. Also remember that white wines are not really that dependent on long storage for a good flavor as much as red wines. So store the reds but the whiles may be consumed on a daily basis without storage.
